I did a complete repair on my tool tray, too. It was re-constructed from one damaged tray and another donor tray that supplemented some plastic:

The Raven e9 project

it attaches to the metal framework in the trunk. the elephant skin panels surround the toolbox, there are no screws that go through those pieces. if you are worried about the metal contact, put some thin neoprene fender washers between. the problem of the original toolbox is that weight...

I was encouraged by Stephen's efforts in repairing the toolkit as well as what others have done and posted that I followed their advise and took a stab at repairing a couple of my toolkits as well. Overall, I think they turned out pretty good.

Thanks to Stephen for his help and info on a source and details for the rivets.
