Like you I decided to go to bare metal on my GTV to avoid any chance of future problems with the 47 year old original paint. He said I was being paranoid and an epoxy sealer would be good enough. I’m hoping the extra investment will also pay for itself when I get tired of cars and sell it to the next caretaker.
The guy painting my GTV said a clear coat will not deliver an OEM single stage appearance, but will be more durable and allows for easier maintenance. I said, “screw originality, let’s go with practicality.”
Then he said he will do a 3-stage paint job that will add depth to my pastel non-metallic color: first the base color then a transition layer done with clear tinted with color, and finally the clear.
I don’t know much about this but friends who are pro painters said it’s a common technique for higher quality restoration paint jobs.
