I'm nearing the end of my E3 build so I moved my next project down to the shop. '73 tii Golf/Black. I still plan on putting an air suspension on the E3 but will start a different thread for that.

While waiting to put carbs on I took the tires off my Style 5's and will start stripping them down soon. I'll still start out with the stock wheels and hubcaps but will end up with these on the car after the suspension is put on.

I'll probably end up with the same wheels on mine...got them from Markos a while back. The Coupe King Alpinas on the Bav now are for my Coupe (eventually).

Our cars may end up looking a bit like twins at first glance!

THAT, is going to look awesome. Keep us posted.. Plus let us know exactly what you are doing to rebuild those Style 5s.

Funny I was going to say - Check with @afeustel for look/feel. :) I think these wheels look particularly good on e3’s!

You can’t buy affordable proper fitting bolts like you can with RS’s. If they are overly corroded then one option is to powder coat them or paint them.

The project has been creeping along lately, sourcing some Weber carbs and dealing with linkage, polishing the Style 5 wheels and learning as I go, but I did manage to make some progress on the hood grilles. One is broken and both had bad chrome so I decided I'm going to paint all the grilles and the wheel centers the same color. To de-chrome the grilles I used "Chlorinating Liquid", or sodium hypochlorite. Otherwise known as bleach. You're suppose to use at least 5% active ingredient and most cleaning bleaches are well below that, but I noticed the pool supplies next to the cleaning products and the Chlorinating Liquid is 10%! I mixed it about half and half with water in a tub.

I'll plastic weld and bond the broken piece and prep them for paint.

Thanks so much for sharing this-- just read through it all again. Looks great!
I might be copying you with the style 5's if I can find any one piece 15 inchers.

Third brake light hack. I bought an LED third brake light off of eBay for $14 shipped and I'm happy with the way it turned out. It's not that visible on the back window and you don't see it in the mirror since it doesn't view that high. The wiring harness for the trunk/brake lights runs over the top of the rear seat and wheel well so I spliced into it right there. Fairly easy process.

EDIT: After a few days the light fell off the window because the padded tape they use didn't bond to the glass well enough. I removed the pads and glued the flat plastic surface to the glass with hot melt glue. So far it's held after about two weeks.

Waiting for pictures with finished wheels.
Curious- did you add under hood insulation?

Not yet but it's on my list. The paint store where I get all my supplies has a good selection of insulations so I'm going to check those out next time I'm there. I was going to ask in the General forum if there's much you can do about the tappet noise from these engines. Seems like insulation would help somewhat but I'm not expecting much. It should keep the paint on my hood from cracking from the heat though. LOL
