If a new battery isn’t in the budget, I’m not sure how you are going to get the car running. Why not buy your ideal battery and keep it on a new, digitally controlled tender? They sell them at HF for like $30.
Logan has been on mye28 for like 15 years, lives in the bay area, and knows everything about e28’s and S38’s. He has also worked on numerous member’s cars at a number of shops in the bay area, including e9 specialists.

So happy to have the weekly 'over the weekend' update. Probably running by tomorrow - hope so.
Most precincts have reported, and here is what our forecaster is predicting:
1) Logan did arrive and texted (650) 4310316. The subscriber did not know Alan, confirming 4310316 is a VIN and not a phone number.
2) A new battery arrived, the label is correct, all uppercase.
3) Logan is exploring if the car was wired for positive ground to extend the life of the spark plugs. The plugs being really clean is consistent with the theory, but also with the fact the engine never started.
4) YHS' alternate theory is that the starter was rebuilt with incorrect brushing, inverting the direction of starter rotation.
The engine opens the exhaust valve and then tries to fire the spark. One could try to feed fuel mixture through the exhaust
and see if it works.
In short, the experts are focused on electrical problems, and all agree that it would be really bad luck to have 3) and 4) in the same car.
