Most of the orange stuff you see in the interior pictures is the old carpet backing. The rusty areas in the interior were on the rear floor pans which were solid when struck with a screwdriver, so I am hoping are savageable after blasting.

Some more pics. Looks like outer rockers are in good shape, but front floor pans have are really crusty. The car will be sent for media blasting in next two weeks. Will see what the real deal is soon.

Removed the parcel tray and discovered some unusual holes that were cut out aside from the square speaker hole in the middle. There are about a half dozen dime sized (some smaller) holes that are perfectly cut across the metal deck. There is tape on the underside of the panel to stop fumes and noise, but I am puzzled why these holes are here in the first place. Thoughts.

Speaker wires I'm guessing or possibly where bolts poked through to secure some kind of speaker box?

Could be for wires of some sort. The only speaker was a really old Blaupunkt unit that couldn’t have been more that 4”x4”, I don't think they would have tried to put a speaker box around something that small.

Small update:

Car was media blasted and epoxy primered. Evidence of previous damage and repair denoted by the holes in some sections, but nothing too bad. All in all, I’m still feeling lucky with this one.

Roughly a sequential number out of the 30,000 e9 built. Although I would expect a number around 26000 for a 74, maybe numbers started over with the 2800CS?

Underside of the coupe being stripped clean (I will call this procedure a ‘carzilian’ ). Driver’s side rear floor pan may have to be replaced, but it may be salvageable. Again, I think all things considered The car is not too bad. Next step, epoxy coat the exposed metal.

Long time since last post. I’ve been concentrating on everything but my coupe, but I’m getting the project rolling again by working on the small parts first.
I am tackling the restoration of the headlights, tail lights, and side markers. Didn’t take long before I found a discrepancy; looks like the headlight buckets are different from right side to left side. Adjustment knobs are different which kind of affects how the headlights fit. Is the difference between the buckets stock; are the buckets from different years/models (e3); does the difference matter? Can’t say I noticed any difference before taking it apart, but knew that my headlights were terrible (not bright, did not cast a good pattern, and all four headlights are different models).

A used 5 speed and LSD at this point will be limited to the cost of the parts, since everything is already out and in pieces. Both are very nice improvements. LSD will be nice with the stronger engine. I would rather have those modifications than messing with the steering. Just something to consider.

Planning on doing the 5spd and LSD. I’ve tried just about every mod you can imagine to get the coupe dialed in: fresh suspension bits, lowering springs, beefier sway bars, and now coilovers; but haven’t hit on a combo that meets the mark for me. I feel the coupe should be a bit more nimble than it is. I know I’m chasing something that the coupe isn’t, but I still believe there is better to be had.

Walter, buckets are the same but adjusting screws were small on 2800CS and changed to the long plastic ones on 3.0CS.
