Completed the round trip to Hilton Head Island & back for the BMW CCA O'Fest Forever & the Hilton Head Concours. Cindy won the Parker Spooner Award, Athena survived the torrential rain & wind Saturday. Looked good at with the other 12 Coupes at Legends on Sunday. Dropped Cindy at the Savannah airport then drove to Aiken SC for breakfast with friends Stuart & Claire Stahr. Made it to Staunton VA Monday night, then the long 13 hour leg with stops Tuesday to home.

Dude - you were in Aiken on Monday? Stan's Great White arrived in Aiken via tow truck around 1:30. We, along with Tom Baruch, spent a couple of hours Monday afternoon in my garage installing an alternator from Tom's parts horde in Stan's car.

I bought a Fritz Bitz Stainless Exhaust
Andrew, from the pics it looks like you may not have an exhaust hanger/bracket at the back of the transmission. Could you confirm (or correct) what I think I’m seeing.

I’m asking because my exhaust has developed 3 leaks (rust through), and I’m father parts to replace the whole thing. Like you and Stan I’m ordering a Fritz Bits system but am unsure if I should fabricate a mount/hanger at the back of the transmission .

Thanks

John

@JFENG, there is no transmission bracket currently. Nothing is available off the shelf for a 265 5-speed transmission so a custom bracket will need to be fabricated.

If yours hasn’t broken yet, maybe no bracket is needed there
John - I made up a tranny mount at one point. Removed it after a conversation with SFDon; his view at the time was that they are not necessary.

Glad to hear this. Makes my life easier as I’ll be installing a Fritz Bit’s system in a few months.

I think an exhaust mount off the back of the transmission would reduce stress in the system, but perhaps it’s not needed on our street driven cars.

FWIW, the E9 layout is in someways similar to that on my 750 series Alfa. I tried that car without support between the header are rear muffler, and after a 10 hours of racing the vibration/flexing cracked my nearly new stainless headers at the collector.

I suppose E9’s are ok because we aren’t constantly running at redline and driving over curbing at 80mph again and again.

This is the expanded edition...
Andrew Wilson's beautiful 1973 3.0 CSi got a lot of attention at the show. Wilson's car was originally delivered to Italy & had a blown head gasket & a cracked head when he bought it for under $20,000 in 2011. He had it slowly restored over 5 years, and now the car now gets driven addition to looking beautiful at shows. In 2016 the Wilsons drove it across the country to California for BMW's 100-Year anniversary celebration during Monterey Car Week. Then, in June 2019 he shipped the car to California for the Targa California Rally, then attended Monterey Car Week, winning 2nd at Legends of the Autobahn. Then drove cross country in 3 days to attend the Lime Rock Fall Festival Sunday in The Park & won Best BMW at the Meeting of the Marques. She's won awards on both coasts, which is amazing for being driven 80,000 miles in 10 years, he says.

I've seen tons of pictures of Athena, but that is the nicest picture of her I have ever seen. Wunderbar.
