Colours

But the cars shown are repaints, not original...
Anyway, I think too many colors were used for a car made in relatively low numbers :).

you say that, but worldwide there were 30,500+ e9 coupes made. the fact that there were 31 colors utilized across the range. some of the rarest colors are
001 nevada, 036 riviera, 044 pastelblau, 045 arktisblau, 055 athrazitgrau, 058 bristol, 066 florida, 079 mintgrun. the most popular are 060 polaris, fjord, chamonix, baikal, nachtblau, verona, followed by verona, malaga, taiga, golf, schwarz, inka + ceylon.

as i mentioned in the FAQ post, look for the next issue of @Niek's CS magazine - there is a really good article on e9 colors.

Yes! But I think there are a few colors I would have skipped, and others that are awesome and should have been used more. Alfa Romeo GTAs I hear came in just two colors. Jaguar E type close to 40 colors...

i can name a few that i would have skipped, but only a couple. for instance, i like agave but not a huge fan of amazon or jade. i think golf is unique and looks good, just not my cup of tea. i like sahara on the 2002 and Bavaria, not a huge fan on the coupe ... but if its well polished with sharp chrome accents it extremely nice. maybe they didn't need both nacht and atlantik or mintgrun + taiga. maybe didn't need colorado and inka ... but i would love to have any of those colors. when you think about the technology of paint you start to understand the change from granada to verona - better resistance to oxidation. but the change to granatrot later was brilliant. the thing to remember is that at any one time there were only about 20 colors in a given year. fewer in early years of the 2800cs

several colors were basic duplication of acrylic vs metallic - some were just very close
taiga / mint ... atlantik / nacht ... tundra / agave

some were slight color shifts
granada / verona ... tundra / agave / jade ... ceylon / siena (maybe) ...

My father-in-law accompanied me to the SoCal Vintage BMW show in November. Being newly exposed to the E3/E9/E10 era (through me), what blew his mind the most was the incredible color palette. And only about 70% of the colors were represented that day.

Yes, there may have been superfluous colors during those years. But in this age of white/silver/gray/black spectrum that we see on the roads, I think BMW's amazing palette really contributes to the special nature of these stunning coupes and sedans.

oh colors
there are good, and excellent colors,
also terrible ones
also there are extravagant ones

sometimes i would like to be able to change the color with the mood of the day
i would even change to an horrible color once to prove my serenity

Well it’s a heck of a lot better than today’s boring sea of white, grey and black. I’m so sick of the lack of color in new cars. Both my wife and my Acura’s are white… it was not by choice. Deals are deals.

say what you want about white cars, but i loved my 911 in white. i looked at the audi tts in several colors, white was the winner ... i didn't have a chance to buy a red one, and that might have been my 1st choice. i remember going to the airport to pick up my wife one day and she was so thankful i had a white car - even as a small / low car it showed up so well against the sea of black and gray cars. i think about it and many of my favorite cars that i have owned were white. my 82 twin cam supra, my e30 m3, the 911 and the tts. chamonix was one of the colors i wanted for the e9, but the best one i found when i was buying was black. and if i ever find an alpina e21, i would like it to be chamonix ... or maybe polaris. that being said, i am really happy i painted my car ceylon. its a color that is having a 'moment' again. Porsche + Audi both have produced cars in a similar color in the last few years

Cool overview.
I linked it in the FAQ section as well.

Is the Turkis a correct representation? (1:33)
I thought it was more greenish.
Isn't the one in the bmw Museum Turkis?
Erik, My car was painted Turkis with the help of Jon and Paul getting me the correct Glasurit paint. The metallic color has what's called 'The flop". It's blue in the shade and green in the sun. The camera or a monitor can't duplicate the color. The only true color is seeing it in person. The picture in the video is way off the true color. The Coupe in the museum is the correct Turkis.

Oldenzaal made a short video of the 12 metallic colors offered by the factory for the E9. I saw it on FB or Instagram a few weeks ago. They had all 12 cars on a transport carrier.
Fjord, Polaris, Granatrot,Tundra, Baikal,Turkis, Sienna,Nachblau,Ceylon,Taiga,--that's 10
Were 045 arktisblau, 055 athrazitgrau the other 2 colors?
