Grill Badge - E9Coupe.com

Would you mind working some of these suggestions into my take on your initial design?

1) Make the dates right side up (I actually like it the way you did it, but someone wanted to see how this would look).
2) Change E9 Coupe to BMW Coupe (also not sure I like that idea, since this IS the E9 board...

OK - I actually used Power Point and then a couple different programs. PPT only lets you attach text to a curve in one orientation so had to decouple everything with Corel and rotate / move all the letters. For some reason the colors got buggered up a bit in the process too.

I like the bavarian flag theme but it is too busy in the center. Perhaps we could use it to form a saw tooth gear pattern around the outside like many badges have...

For x_atlas0, a "bavaria bat" theme: - inner roundel suitable for c-pillar with bat motif ring and lots of shiny chrome for grill.

I like the bottom one.
I suggest one change.
Where the e and the 9 have the white back ground in the eye. Make the white/blue space diagonal, like the bmw logo.

I am liking each iteration more than the last! My 2cents worth now is to make the background behind the E9 uniform. either all solid blue or the blue and white stylized propeller roundel of BMW (if we could legally do that....

JJ, i like the new design, but prefer the fact that in your first design and Scotts designs, the badges actually say e9coupe on them. Is the badge supposd to represent membership to this forum, or is it just a general badge for e9 owners?

I was initially thinking that such a badge might represent this forum. However, this forum represents E9 owners so... either really. Badges have been commonly used to denote membership in some type of club; often a paid membership. In this case, I think that by owning coupes we are all paying dues. As such, I would propose the the purpose of the badge would be to show our commitment to keeping these beauties on the road; sort of an E9 Preservation Society. Maybe this concept should be incorporated somehow.

I put BMW Coupe on my examples after a forum suggestion. I personally prefer E9COUPE. However, we should get many examples and choose the best aspects from each.

In general, to avoid any potential legal issues, I recommend we avoid using "BMW" and we should also avoid the trademarked blue/white propeller. Then again, I have been sitting with lawyers all day and I'm feeling sensitive... If we do a run of these badges how is BMW going to stop us? Are they going to chase us all down and confiscate them? Probably they'll just come after me. If that happens I'll put a curse on them and make their precious cars all rust after 30+ years -- that'll teach 'em about the wrath of a coupe owner scorned!

On a more serious note, does anyone here know any mucky mucks at BMW? I'd love an introduction. It might not hurt to ask them for some blessing and even financial assistance with this endeavor. I would take it a bit further and suggest that we even ask for permission to post electronic copies of manuals, data sheets, and other materials relevant to the preservation of E9 Coupes. As a professional Business Development person I would feel very comfortable convincing them it was in the best interest of BMW in general -- and if that doesn't work I can alway wave the "rust curse" threat at them!

A couple of comments:

1. The Bavarian flag background would not infringe on any BMW trademarks unless BMW owns Bavaria!.

2. I was involved in trying to get new badges for the CS Registry, but there was not enough interest to cover the costs at that time. This group is much more responsive.

3. The CS Registry badge was/is too large. The cs coupe is an "elegant" automotive design. Too large a badge, in my humble opinion, is not consistent with the overall design.

4. I would be more than willing to participate in a group buy.

5. An alternative to potentially "infringing" on any BMW trademarks, if we go that route, would be to start a BMW SIG- Special Interest Group. That's a bit of work based on what seemed to be the experience with the E31 coupe folks.

Thanks to everyone submitting design ideas! Keep them coming!

Hi All;

Back from a few days of patent law...(I am an expert witness ..last year for BMW, this year for Honda).

I know folks at BMW NA. I could ask them about the logo, but I suggest that we just go do it. To avoid saddling JJ with the responsibility, I suggest all of us who are interested, front a portion of the setup fee, and JJ keep accurate account of the costs. That way we can prove it is not a for profit thing. BMW may still get snitty, but they would have to trade the cost of prosecuting a bunch of guys who used the logo for thier own personal purposes (sort of like painting a roundel on your garage floor-hmm maybe I'll do that!), and for whom there was no profit. I suspect it would a) not be worth it, and b) be really bad press inthe BMW enthusiast community ("BMW slams their most faithful...").

If we ask, then they can say no. If we do it without asking, then they have to notice it, and then raise a stink.. an expensive and politically ugly one. (in patents, the benefits of infringing need to be weighed against the costs of defending infringement). And, in the end, we might have to take our badges off.. which, if it comes to that, we should hold a gathering, and invite the press as we melt them down to slag...while telling the press that we, a bunch of loyal enthusiasts, were just tryting to celebrate our love for our cars..sniff.. but Big Bad BMW, who cares nothing for us, made us melt down our logos, logos that we spent good money on and made no profit..sniff sniff...And we are now all going to sell our cars and buy vintage Cortinas...

I personally like:
-The right side up lettering
-The E9 Coupe words ("BMW Coupe" uses "BMW" and also applies to many other cars (635, 850, E30,new 335, etc...).
- A clever roundel hidden inthe design

Relative to JJs bottom logo above: I like the edges, but maybe a little less busy around the edge, use less black (Maybe add white). I think we should do the alternate sides of the "eyes" blue and white. amd reverse that for the bottom (to form a roundel.

I'll try a cut at this.

Great work JJ!!

I response to Vroomer
In hanggliding we have a saying, " IT IS BETTER TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS, THAN PERMISSION". Pertaining to land owner, don't ask don't tell. They are liable only if they knew and permitted.
Because once BMW knows and say NO, we are hosed. That then becomes basis for a lawsuit.
I still think that we could use the roundel, if we took it from a licensed product, key chain-gear shift knob-other. Only a purist BMW fan would have knowledge of what an E9 is.
Of course on the other hand we aren't doing this to educate the masses.
Colors need to be blue, white and black only. Regardless of design.
My thoughts only, YMMV.
thanks
steve

On the topic of colors we could also go to something based on (adds RED / Magentato the mix):

or

(stolen from MichaelP).
I used to have this on a T-shirt when I was a kid but I never learned the full history of it. I always thought it was the best BMW logo.

I like that one best so far....Can you add an" image", outline or "silhouette" in the middle of that badge ..of say the side profile of
a golf CSL or one of those Luigi flying CSL'S !! I think that would look really cool !!

I like it!
I see no BMW infringement. While showing the propeller colors, it is just different enough to be original.
I have no problem with adding the other colors from previous posts, but how colorful do we want to make it.
Concensus of other owners is more important.
As a note to our members from other countries that haven't expressed much input, Americans are not generally INTO auto badges.

Badges - misc

I would definitely NOT ask BMWNA - I just brought it up since they sometimes are snitty. I am not a lawyer, so therefore I can plead ignorance.

I would use the Roundel if we want to - the Bavaria flag is also nice. JJs latest suggestion is an old Motorsport logo and since the e9s were arguably the earliest major successful racing effort of BMW I think this is nice to. I would make a badge that can at least be a grill badge - whether it can double as a C pillar badge can be decided. I really like the idea of having e9 in the logo. I would dump the kidney grills.

The prototype by Arnie is $100 that is then applied to the actual order. I have no problem with sending JJ a deposit so it is a breakeven proposition.

Just my 0.02

Nice job Scott - classy.

For possibly a more sporty option, can you show the blue "E9" inners instead with a motorsports blue/whiite checker and without the sawtooth ring?

I realize this isn't your day job but I figure you are way ahead of the curve by having the guts already designed!

Thanks,
Tom
