Grill Badge - E9Coupe.com

The checkers are nice. I would opt for Bavaria diamond... However, we need to bear in mind that cloisonne work requires metal between colors and it is hard to make it too thin (I would guess about 1/16" minimum).

Stylistically I think Scott's latest version is getting really close. My two comments are mainly technical:
1. The White and Blue teeth should possibly be bigger. The small size could make the cloisonne difficult. It is also possible that they do not really need color - there is nothing wrong with polished chrome. Similarly, the white teeth could be swapped for pure silver and the blue teeth kept.
2. The lower inner blue portion needs to be bounded by metal... I this this would possibly destroy the stylized E9 in the center.
3. The "tooth" motif is fairly common. Does anyone have a drawing of the M30 CAM sprocket that could be used as a template?

I would also point out that the chrome c-pillar badge base is vaugely reminiscent of the BMW Motorsport concept. We may be able to grab some styling from this.

Then again, there is no rule that says a badge must be round or symetrical:

I'm very late to this discussion but I'll add my two cents.

I applaud the spirit and desire to take on this project, but I would bring up the fiasco that was the original CS Registry Badge effort. I don't recall who spearheaded the effort but I do seem to recall a lot of frustration, financial messes, and a general feeling of "I'll never undertake something like this again". My personal experience/opinion is that when calculating whether or not this scales, whether or not you have enough replies to make it economically feasible, you should consider that perhaps as few as 50% of respondants that say they'll purchase (or would be interested in purchasing) a badge, will actually do so in the end. I learned this the hard way with my instrument binnacle, and I got burned.

I like many of the designs that have been offered, preferring the cleaner and simpler approaches, but they're all much better than anything I could have come up with, so kudos to all who submitted something for review.

Sadly, my belief is that BMWNA will claim copyright infringement on any design which has the blue and white propeller motif, especially if it's in a circular background. I know it seems silly since we're supporting the brand, and the numbers are so small, even moreso considering their inability to stop Infiniti (and is it Lexus too now) from using the M moniker.

Regards,

Lookin' good! Now, are these being considered for the C-pillar? If so, it should probably be a smooth edged circle. A jagged edge with Bavarian colours would be cool for a grille. I like the idea of the Bavarian checkered colours making up the middle portion with the E9 letters more visible (say, black outlined). This is a great idea, still.

Is this project viable? Not sure yet. We've got about 20+ unique sets of feedback and I know I would spring for at least 3 myself. We would need about 36 to break even @ $30, less at a slightly higher price. The total exposure would be $1100 for 40 and I am not worried about "floating" a fair portion of this for a few years. My feeling is that if we do a run of 40-50 and make it known on the site that they are available they will eventually all sell. If not there is always Ebay.

Keeping good records and ensuring that no profit is made would be important to overcoming any legal battles. I do tend agree that we should avoid a blatant logo transgression. As for forgiveness vs. permission I think permission would be wiser if we want a highly BMW-ish look.

As for C-Pillar use I think it is up in the air. The C-Pillar badge is 59mm and fits into a 60mm plate. It must be perfectly round and it has some fairly precise mounting bolts. I am sure we could duplicate it but then we would have a smallish grill badge; I think a proper badge should be about 70-90mm. However, the nice thing about the C-Pillar badge is that you need 2 (or 3 with grill too) so we would need fewer takers pull it off!

I will check with the badge company to see if they are able to hold the diamter to 58.5mm +/- 0.5mm with mounting bolts centered in the horizontal axis at 24mm from centerline at +/- 0.75mm.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words, but this design really beagn with JJ, so he deserves the credit, I just did the drawing.

I also really like JJ's version with the car silhouette.

I think we should consider three mods.

1) I'll try doing one with an all metal edge that looks like a cam gear (great suggestion! I can't remember who posted that).

2) I'll also try doing one with larger teeth. That will be easier from a cloisonnee prespective.

3) I'll try the Bavarian flag diamonds in place of the blue (to avoid trademark hassles.

and on both I'll try to work out the white to blue interface so it works in cloisonnee.

While I agree with TJ that these things can be a PITA, I also thin there is a certain Quixiotic quality to owning an E9, so far be it for us to beg off in the interest of reality or practicality! (My 635 is names Rosanante.. after Don Quixote's Rocinante)... maybe I should name the E9 "Sancho"..., or would Dulcinea be better...

I like this project. I am more than willing to put up a portion of the setup costs, and if I have to, I'l buy a few extra badges if necessary. I strongly suugest we get a quorum of actually committed folks (as in willing to write and send a check that wont be cashed unless we reach our minimum number) before we ink a deal though.

Badges? Badges??!! We don't need no stinkin badges!

I resemble that remark! I think it captures the essence of the E9 passion and experience. I move that we adopt it as a tag-line.

To this end, I am confident that this is a good project. In keeping with the spirit of avoiding reality or practicality I have got about 20 hours invested in a custom gear shift knob. I am laminating two colors of wood into a Bavarian flag motif and the hand turning it on a lathe. I suspectI I'll have about $50 in materials and it will take about 40 hours total to complete. Considering my time, I figure this shift knob will cost me well over $2000 and it will be well worth it! (I'll post pictures when complete).

I consider this grill badge project to be an almost trivial windmill to tilt! ...this leads to another notion: we should incorporate a "Windmill" theme rather than a propeller theme - that would make a statement!

Now with cam gear, windmill theme, no BMW issues, round,...

Good ideas, all around.

Once thing though, we have to decide if the badge is just going to be about coupes in general, or will it be a badge for just this site? All the badges so far have just esentially said "Hey, I have an E9!" which is great and all, but considering they will be, well, on the E9, it seems kinda redundant. I think the badge should show membership in this community, not just that one has an E9.

These designs just keep getting better!
The last option might be to add the outer ring like out C pillar badge.

I think I would not add the .com part as anyone seeing the badge who owns an E9 will likely ask about it if they don't already know.

I now associate "E9" with this group.

I tend to agree. Earlier I proffered the idea of using "E9 Preservation" or "E9 Coupe Presevation" instead of a simple "E9 Coupe"

I would go a bit further to make the suggestion that this forum should adopt a formal, yet simple, mission statement. The closest thing we have is the Home Page blurb:
Welcome to e9coupe.com! This is a site dedicated to the preservation of early coupes built by BMW, including the 2000 C, 2800 CS, 3.0 CS, 3.0 CSi, 3.0 CSL and racing versions. The content of this site is contributed and maintained by the owners and enthusiasts of these beautiful and unique driving machines. Whether you are a current coupe owner, past owner or just an admirer, we welcome visitors from all around the world!

Is that preservation or ressurrection?

Sorry for diving into this thread a bit late, but I have been following it since the beginning. My artistic skills aren't that great so I don't have a design to offer. However I really like the one done by Scot / Tomp and adapted by jhjacobs.
My reasons, Simple, uncluttered and elegant like the vehicle. I would purchase one, with the cost to ship to Scotland.
I would not replace the current badging on the car, but mount it somewhere on the front grill.

As a suggestion the one jhjacobs designed could be adapted for a plain simple window sticker, one that sticks on the inside of the rear window

We are now at 23 people involved about about 12 official takers (here and PM).

Bad news:
-- The badge shop I initially intended to use (arniebrown) is not taking orders
-- My attorney says that if I order badges and BMW gets upset I'll be first in their sights

Good news:
-- I've already found and contacted several more vendors
-- One of the vendors claims to be able to produce a badge with a 58.5mm +/-0.75mm tolerance with any type of mounting we want. This could accomodate a C-Pillar application
-- My attorney says the odds of a fight are about 0.0001% or less if we are low key
-- I'm now looking off-shore to see what other sources are possible

Count me in...

I will buy one for sure as long as it is not horrendously tacky and none of the suggestions fit that catagory!

Well, then by all means, post up a design. More choices are good!
