Is this an E9 engine

Barry, 6506 left hand drive CSi were produced starting at VIN 22650001.
Okay thanks for that,
As mine was made in 1973 rhd 3.0 csi it is possibly 1 of 66 in the world .
Or is it 1 of 1 in the world as apparently there was a mistake at the factory in 1973 by whomever entered my cars data into the system . :)

From the picture, The 3.5 on the block would seem to indicate and engine change at possible increase in capacity. The oil filter also is from a later car. The engine number is engraved on the block.

Barry, Your VIN is a LHD coupe delivered to the UK, it has a 2265xxx VIN, a RHD CSi has a 435xxxx VIN.
This is a photo of my car taken in 1974 while it was still owned by the first owner .
It is RHD and up until today I believe it always was and still is today .
Did Bmw convert some over to RHD for sale new in 1974 ?????

Almost certainly not. The second series RHD, as has been stated, starts at 4350001

I have a stack of receipts and documents going back to when the car was new from the first owner of the car and also a load from later owners , and honestly there is no mention of it ever being a left hand drive car , and as I have shown in the photo of my car taken in 1975 it is a RHD 3.0 csi .
So I am really confused now , maybe I could email Bmw for some clarification ...

Hi Chris
I have a pic of the engine bay if that helps to prove it is a RHD car .
She is also a matching numbers car , the vin is on the riveted plate , the engine block above the starter motor mount the gearbox , stamped into the bulkhead and is also mentioned on almost every receipt that came with the car from the previous owners .
So I’m confused ! But thanks again for any information that’s out there .
I definitely have a mystery on my hands

IIRC Series 1 RHD CSI have VIN 225.....
from the pics your car would seem to be a series 1 as it has the earlier wheels, if the seams on the seats run fore and aft rather than side to side This would confirm a series 1 car

A 2265xxx lhd coupe should have a matching vin on body and motor from the factory as you apparently have.
I have sent an email to BMW archives to see if they can shed some light on it for me , maybe they have more ideas

I seem to have a similar question. I have a RHD csa VIN 2231410 - delivered in 1972 to the UK. I do have a replacement engine with a 3.5 cast into the block but as far as I know its a 3.0 replacement engine. Can anyone decode the engine serial number to see if it is a 3.0?

Okay thanks for that, I was getting worried genuinely in case my car was a not what it seemed earlier.
Thanks again it probably is an early car so

Barry, mine’s the same as yours a 2265xxx car. It’s a RHD CSi. From what I can gather, before dedicated RHD cars were built (series 2) cars were built LHD and then converted, presumably in the UK, using parts sent over from Germany.
