Raised letter hood roundel

Yes, as I recall it there was also a pad in aluminium that was shaped with the curves of the boot lid and on top the flat raised emblem was mounted.

The ones you buy today are in one piece.

TRUNK emblem 51 14 1 813 833 on BMW of South Atlanta link actually has two separate bases listed:

51 14 5 780 172 and 51 14 5 780 171

So the original TRUNK emblem had TWO separate bases on which the emblem mounted?

Raised letter hood roundel TAKE 2

Now I am more confused than ever...

Walloth&Nesch shows that 51 14 5 480 181 is supposed to be used with a separate base (socket) and that 51 14 5 081 747 has an integrated socket (which is not what the diagram from RealOEM is suggesting)?????

ECS Tuning's picture of "747" seems to suggest it has an integrated base as well.

I ordered "747" and will update when I receive it.

Base plate is NLA, as far as I know

Rob

That is correct. I posted that the original base (socket) 51 14 5 780 170 for the hood roundel was NLA.

The point I was trying to get across is that realOEM shows that "747" requires the socket but that does not seem to be the case. It seems that "181" (the one I bought from BavAuto) is actually the correct part if you have a base and need a new raised letter hood roundel. And that "747" has an integrated socket and is the one you need if you do not have a separate socket and want a new raised letter hood roundel.

welcome to the world of NLA AND NOS parts....I can source originals here when I am at shows....they are around, I have bought a few over the past year.....when I find another NOS one for the back I will sell a very good set of originals....if I ever find the rear NOS one.

Some pics of trunk and hood roundels and bases:

One of them is probably the rubber gasket between the base and the trunk

The picture provided by Stevehose of that "golden ring" between the trunk and base (looks like 51 14 5 780 171 on the RealOEM diagram) does not look to be a rubber gasket?

It's an original gasket so it has "aged." I forgot i had this, here's what a new one looks like, and lo and behold it has part number 172 on it so it looks like the diagram may be wrong (not unusual):

Walloth&Nesch shows the chrome socket to be 54 14 5 780 171. And 54 14 5 780 172 looks like the one in the diagram. So is it correct to conclude that the rubber gasket sits between the trunk roundel and the socket (base) and NOT between the socket and the trunk itself?

To protect the paint I think

Great post!
As in my previous post I remember there was a base part on the boot lid. I found that corroded part among all other parts in boxes from PO long time ago. Guess I unfortunately sorted this corroded part to the trash can in my early E9 years..

But still, I got the original raised flat boot lid emblem hanging on my garage wall together with
other pieces like original steering wheel and original engine undercover plate. Both symbolic and lack of storage space :)

What anyway do you guys hanging at your garage wall?

I received "747". It indeed has an integrated base. It is raised letter and painted (not enamel).

Partial hijack... Does anyone have a source for re-painting or re-enameling these? It's not a DIY job for me if I want it to look like it did 40 years ago when it was new.
