Stahl Headers

Stevehose, no other performance mods at the moment. I would consider a cam in the future though.

SFDon says my M30B35 cam is a "K" code with dual springs. Unsure of the this "K" significance - seems stock/standard issue to me but maybe not. Anyone know about "K" code cams?

Tod - What's the specification of your Burke cam? I am considering the upgrade to my own b35 and another I am building. Thinking the next step up in performance from stock?

Thanks,

The K cam is a 264 duration used first in the euro m30b34 engine and then in the US m30b35 engine.
Slightly spicier than the US 260 cam.

Sven, PM me your email addy and I'll send you a copy of the cam's spec sheet I have. I have the N21 version but for a B34 motor. Paul told me it was similar to a Schrick 284.

For the B35, here are some recent notes from Paul's shop with regard to one of his cams:
The N21 camshaft would be an excellent upgrade. It retains the same idle characteristics and basic torque/horsepower curve, but increases rear wheel torque from 190 ft./lbs.@3800 rpm to 236 ft./lbs.@3800 rpm. Rear wheel horsepower is increased from 171@5800 rpm to 218@5800 rpm. The M30 B35 cylinder head already has dual valve springs, however, the seated and open pressures should be checked.
He does grind his own cams, so if you have a particular spec in mind, he may be able to accommodate you.

There has been fair amount of discussion and interest in cams on this board lately, so if you all are serious, there may be an opportunity for a group buy if Paul does those. I do know he tends to be VERY busy so keep that in mind.

Paul can be reached at [email protected] if you want more info on any of his products.

Another message RE Paul Burke cam

The best camshaft for a stock M30 B34 motor is Paul's N11 grind for $579.00. It is a single pattern cam with a 278 degree duration. This bumps rear wheel torque 35 ft/lbs and adds 20 rear wheel horsepower. It retains the same operational characteristics of the stock camshaft.

How about Stan taking over the Stahl business and rebrand as Stan headers?

Headers

I talked to Judy Stahl a couple of years ago and at that time their jigs were available for sale...then they changed their minds and would do headers by special order (cheaper than Korman NOS by the way) Seems the jigs must be available again. Certainly a good side line if the price was right.

i just got a reply from Carl Bennett at Korman. they recommend the 1 3/8 primary tube for better throttle response - unless you have an engine that is using a schrick 304 (or larger cam) and triple 45 dcoes.

i inquired about any modifications - he said that on some 3.5 blocks (not all) you have to grind the block slightly to achieve the clearance. its not a major modification.

korman sells the stahl for $1356 plus $406 for the ceramic coating. they do not stock the uncoated header. they could offer a 10% discount for 2 or more. (coated or uncoated). even w/ the discount, its cheaper to deal with stahl direct ... and perhaps they would offer a qty. discount.

Carl's final comment ... if you want to get one, DO NOT WAIT. it depends on how much tubing they have stacked up.

anybody interested?

i spoke to Judy Stahl ... she says they will give a discount on orders for 3 to 5 and 6 to 10. i have asked what the discount is ... list is $1186, 3 to 5 is $990 and more than 6 is $810. that's a great price, who else is in? we need 4 more if Stan is still in.

on the sale of the jigs, they would like to sell the jigs for the entire BMW line (18 models) - inclusive of the bending instructions and sample headers ... 5000 bucks. of course then you need the tools to build them. anybody interested into going into the header business?

Sizing

I'd join but I'm not sure 1 3/8 is big enough for a 3.5l with performance cam and triple 40DCOE's? Seems like 1 1/2 or Ireland Engineerings header might be a good alternative to these Stahls.
