What did you do to your E9 today?

Today...

I drove my Coupe across the border into Washington State to pick up the new, but incorrect, front roundel badge. Came out turned the key and got click, nothing, click, nothing, click then started. Guess it's time to trace grounds, corrosion on connections etc, etc. But it was a great drive! Mike

If you don't find anything obvious Be sure to check the electrical part on the back of the ignition switch they are known for coming loose since they are only crimped on

How old is your starter? Could be heat soak on solenoid.

Today...

Hey Steve,
Starter is fresh rebuild from trusted local source. Replaced couple months ago as part of water pump/alternator/linkage/engine paint etc...."freshening". Was decades old, would go ...zing! every few starts. Now as a rebuilt unit it never does that, but sometimes the disconcerting....click.

Didn't do it today, but I had it aligned recently. No wonder it was dog tracking.

Changed the oil, and it seems the oil canister retaining bracket has been making light contact with the canister.

And then I drove it to work yesterday because I wanted to.

Finished re working my throttle linkage, have done the conversion to a cable from the new throttle body to the rocker on the side of the engine block. (standard back to the pedal)
The best tweek has been removing the spring from the rocker mechanism which is quite "snappy" and replacing with a softer "stretch" spring.
This has made the gas pedal really nice to work, much more like a modern car, has a really nice liner feel especially coming of a closed throttle.

Clutch and brakes next!

These are problems I'm picking you LHD owners dont experience, But the "driving feel" on the RHD (especially the brakes) is a real compromise.

Parking brake disintegration

Brendan, I cut the parking brake assembly out of the e24 that I had, it's much more substantial and should fit perfectly. You may want to try that as I'm sure you can find a junked one somewhere. I will be putting it into the blue coupe once I have the engine and trans out for the transplant. I have worked on a couple of friends' e9's that had multiple welds on that area and they just seem to keep tearing- Let me know if you need one right away, I could send you mine and you could source another for me.

Appreciate it Peter. I'll let you know if I need one. My Uncle is fantastic with a welder, so I'll see if he can work his magic before I replace the whole tray.

Did a beer run up to Gardiner ME in Athena. Dropped off two six-packs at European Auto Service and went to the craft beer store where I bought some 14 stouts for The Vintage in Asheville.

Ordered new forged pistons, 144mm H beam conrods and lots of other goodies for my new 3.5 from Ireland Engineering.

:)

Adjusted idle advance to 17 degrees mechanical for highest manifold vacuum level and smooth idle, removed vacuum advance at idle, 36 degrees all in with a little more aggressive advance curve, +8 additional vacuum advance at highway cruise, drops out when accelerating hard. Done on the 123ignition distributor to take advantage of triple Webers and Schrick cam. Engine has never run better and sings like an opera diva at >3000 rpm :)

Plus a spectacular evening for cruising!

Tear up the road !!

Drove to Larz Anderson German Car Day with Stan & Skicoach. Saw TodB, Duane Sword & Vbigdog along with my 2002 and E28 M5 friends. Had a great time and it was a tremendous turn out. Also received the first signed copy of Rob Siegel's new book about electrical systems. It was a great day.
