Engine... Done. Summary is that my 2.8 was scrap. Someone assembled it wrong and it oiled starved and ruined the top end while taking its toll on the crank and block. Economically unsalvageable. A 3.0 was had. Built to stage 1 specs. All good to go.
Transmission done. Very early non rail shift. After months and months. Seals unobtainable. Synchros not quite right. Abandoned due to parts. Sold for chunks. New later 3.0 trans and shifter rebuilt. We will have some issues with mounting, guibo etc. They have gathered all the parts I need.
Rear end done. I had a very early 2000 style LSD. Eight bolt. LSD carrier (not calling that the proper name) broken. Part not available. Searched the earth. No dice. Rebuilt a new LSD with the same gearing. 10 bolt that will handle the extra torque.
Waiting on some ancillary parts from BMW and invoicing.
Will pick up as soon as all parts are gathered. Instructions for install are put together and invoicing done.
Not where we wanted to go but it will be the right result.
this is a thing that is only contained within the general restoration parts. i bought a lot of my rubber from getbmwparts.com ... W+N is generally cheaper, but shipping is expensive - there are some pieces that are only available as repops from w+n. but also be sure to check with bts-autoteile
I’ll poke through all sites. I did see some of the items on getbmwparts. Always reminds me of how spoiled I was all these years with Moss Motors for my MG stuff. One stop shop… this is certainly challenging. Does not help that WN’s website is just not the most user friendly thing in the world.
Humming right along…. I guess. Doing a bunch of stuff I guess out of order but I was waiting on a bunch of seals and others parts… still waiting on some other parts. Most notably the molded part of the headliner. Mine was cracked in half.
Stefan’s seals are really nice… and he sent a T-shirt… that was nice.
Once again thanks to @TomHom for the tail lights, dash pads and probably something else I’m forgetting. Guess I missed the fact that it’s a 3.0 dash with the extra hole by the right column. Maybe I’ll put an ejector seat button there.
making great progress Todd ... keep it going! chances are that the tail end has been bumped and fixed. a good body guy can make it fit right. the turn signal end of my left tail light stuck out a bit. before painting, my guy fixed it so that it fits perfectly.
question - did you spray thermal or sound insulation on the floor? if not, have you given any thought to dynamat or dynaliner ... especially at the tranny tunnel / firewall to lessen heat transfer. might be a good idea before you stick the evaporator in.
