So sorry for your loss, but you were blessed to be able to share time together working on something you both loved. Very special memories...

Hi Ed. I am deeply sorry to hear about Papa. One thing for sure is the very important closeness you had with him. I worked with my son every Sat.on the 67 2000cs that I ended up giving to him because it was planned that it would be his when I passed. I am grateful that I had the time to spend with him, because he nows lives 100 miles away. I was not fortunate to have that closeness with my Dad. He got Cancer at 36 and died ten years later and it was very difficult living with him so sick and so hard to even be in the same room. So again we hae to remember the good times we spend together.

Thank you, everyone for your kind words and sympathies. I made it a point many years ago to involve myself more in lives of my aging parents. I worked hard at filling our lives with happy memories so when the day arrived I would not look back and say to myself, " I wish I had done more..." I have a smartphone full of wonderful pictures and videos and head full of memories I will carry with me to the end of days. It was my distinct pleasure to care for my parents and we had many lovely times together.

The fifth commandment..."Honor thy father and thy mother"

It was all worth it to me... 1000 times over.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words about my dad and for those helping me here locally. I can tell you, the first time I drove back to the shop to try and get some work done was not easy. I've had a lot of help from Barney and we have made progress on the odd work days. My free time is becoming more available and I know the ball will roll more quickly now.

We fetched the car from the paint shop a couple months ago. The underside was treated with POR15 in the nooks and crannies. The bottom of the car is painted with the Galsurite Granada. The sub frames are painted chassis black. The engine is painted and aluminum buffed. Fuel tank was treated/sealed with RedKote and painted. As of last Saturday, the engine was mounted on the front subframe and installed on the car. Rear subframe and brakes were also installed.

It's rolling on it's own wheels for the first time in about 10 months. We'll wrap the wiring harness next and then start installing lights, trim, and gas tank.

Things will happen more quickly now, but several items will keep us waiting, I'm sure... wood, headliner, and I have to have the flywheel machined to accept a diaphragm-style clutch...no biggie.

Here's some pictures.

Perhaps soon, I will be able to post a full body shot without the plastic wrap...

"things will move more quickly..." quick like a glacier, maybe.

Not much has happened since August 11th.... except moving two houses and climbing into a hole and wishing the world would leave me the hell alone for a while.

I'm back on the car now... got to Barney's place over the weekend and sorted out all the disarray that was the parts storage area and put my eyes on all the parts, new and old. Things are laid out, and a plan is in motion. we cleaned up and regreased the rear window mechanisms to say we accomplished something. The wood is back from Bela and it looks, well... unbelievable.

5 speed parts are in-hand and we'll jump on that first. I'm happy to be back working on the car and spending time with good friends as we finish the project.

Chopping away, bit by bit.

Repainted the headlight fixtures and installed the NOS reflectors I found. Still sorting out the seal for the big glass lenses. Almost got it. Using W&N’s seals for the e9 tail lights. Needs trimming.

Also sorted out Blunt’s short shift kit for the 5 speed swap. The Z3 short shifter won’t allow me to use the original chrome NK lever. I used a 320i shifter that allows me to install that NK lever. I had to put some bushings in the dogbone to make it work. No problem. Harry Malkasian sent me an almost perfect chrome lever to replace my scratched-up one. Thanks Harry!!

5 speed installed this weekend with help of good friends and some emergency fabrication skills when the horseshoe bracket I had didn’t fit at all. No problem... we scrounged some 1/4” plate and cut out a new one.

Put the front sway bar in, too.

I’ll drop the driveshaft off for shortening tomorrow.

One piece at a time...

Absolutely, Stevo...
Also need to re-wire brush that transmission. It looks atrocious. I cleaned it, then it got dew on it and it got funky... That’ll never do. :)

Here’s a nice shot of Barney’s play pen... He’s redoing the interior of his Baur.

in the coupes the gearbox bracket has it's bolts almost "in line" , and i find the chassis points rather weak. ( Thin plate, small bolts) . But ok , it's only a "pulling" force. Here with the U bracket …. there will also be a bending force.... is the chassis mount strong enough at that place ?

This U-bracket has been used for decades on 5 speed conversions in the 2002s and NK cars. It might not be as strong as attaching new brackets to the sides of the transmission tunnel, but appears to be stout enough. If this were destined to be a race car, or for hard use/lots of miles, I would place new brackets directly in line with the rear of the transmission. I wanted to keep from drilling new holes, or welding anything new. This 5 speed is the only non-stock addition to the car and I wanted to be able to go back to original as easily as possible. I will certainly keep an eye on the mounts in the years to come.

With lots of help from some of the local crew, we got the hood, deck lid, fuel tank, fuel door, and some bling on today... Hood needs minor tweaking for final fit, but it’s close.
