70 - 2800CS - 2270111 restoration - ode to the past

I think I will do the spacer kit from Hal as I have good calipers. Erik... I know its hard to see in pictures but I already procured the rotors and they are on. Did this when I put new bearings in the front hubs.

The hubs were just nasty. I just don't understand why people just throw globs of grease in these and then go.... all good!

Now on to the bad news from today

Korman called. They got the engine, diff and transmission torn down. The bad news is two fold....

The engine is a boat anchor. Someone rebuilt it at some point. Very very poorly. A laundry list of bad work. The oil tube was backwards (See... Don's warnings are just for laughs). It starved the top end destroying the camshaft. The valve guides were so loose they destroyed the head beyond repair. Along with this someone put the rocker arm back together wrong as evident by the clips installed wrong. That is destroyed. Almost off the intake and exhaust valves were bent.

Also along the way the engine picked up something large and spun bearing on 1 and 5 completely destroying the crank beyond repair. All the bearings were bad but those two the worst. The spun bearings and trash killed the cylinder walls on 1 and 5 and to a lesser extent 3.

Bottom line... it would be way more work to try to resurrect the 2.8 from the ashes. Cranks are NLA, pistons about the same and the block would take more time than it is worth.

So..... we are getting a 3.0... Korman has a core and we will rebuild from there.

Sadly (or not depending on who you are) the 2800 will be a 2800 in name only from here on out.
 
The next item of bad news...

1st my car is (was) a LSD car...thats good.

Bad news... the housing is broken (pics).... and apparently the part (33 14 1 201 950) cannot be located...

I'd be very tempted to look for a B35... The newer the better and with that you'd have more motor and if you wanted to rebuild it the chances of it being less worn out are a lot better... JMHO and qualified as such.

As to the diff, it's an 8 bolt diff and those are pretty much impossible to do much with. You can't get different gears for them and you can't covert them to a 10 bolt. The 10 bolt unit is the one to have, although 10 bolt LSD's are getting pretty scarce.
 
Good to hear you like Korman. I am seriously thinking of sending my engine and diff there. The trans will be swapped out for a 265 that I have had for the past 15 years..

Your project is inspiring., My 3.0 is perhaps in only slightly less bad condition, It is a cosmetic mess, but very little rust that I have found, with extensive probing, and the drivetrain ran strong when I bought her. Just been sitting quite a while while life has been happening.

Your restoration process seems almost exactly like what I have been envisioning. I am planning to either rebuild or replace the entire wire harness as well.

having had a Korman 2002 engine (stage 3+) - it was a well built as was all the work they did on that 2002. there are several great engine builders in the USA that i have direct experience with and are highly recommended

Absolutely… great people out there…talked to a few of them.

I picked Korman for a few reasons but proximity was one of them. We have family down there so it made for a good visit trip. It’s not a bad drive for me.

What I know about restoring cars is expect nothing because when you think you’ve made a great deal… turns out it wasn’t… think it’s everything you expected… it’s not.

Of the seven or eight cars I’ve completely restored… maybe one met initial expectations.

Just the way it is. Prepare for the worst… then you won’t be disgusted.

That and it’s a ton of work… if you don’t love it… well, that’s a problem.
 
Hey Jon! Finally another E9 near me… I was starting to think I was the only one in NE Ohio (not likely but I have never seen one in my area).

I will let you know if this does not work out.

The member's map function was helpful in finding other forum members near you, but that feature has gone away. I hope it comes back though perhaps it was a security risk as well?
