Fixing that little rust spot...

Erik, I had a box of broken tool tray bits that I saved after I refurbished my tray. I'll see if I still have them. If so, I'm happy to donate them to your cause.
Stephen

May I ask, where you found that?

It's a plate made by a plastic company Kraiburg, to demonstrate their TPE capability (Thermo Plastic Elastomer, the black rubbery stuff) and how well it adheres to the PP from Sabic.

It's a trade sample that i got when working in automotive. 20 years ago.

When I'm done, I can mail it to you.

Ok, the good part is the head. It measures 129,5mm and shows the dimples. .
It has been decked once before I think. No visual cracks. Could go back on with fresh ground valves & seals.
But it isn't a B35 head...

The bad parts:
Pistons are out of spec; 0,06 to thin appearently.

Bore is out of spec as well, 0.09 to big.

Rockers shafts have been hammered out with a vice grip, and hammered back in, mushroming the ends, which were shaved to fit again. Loosening the head bolts would have prevented it.20251015_123128.jpg20251015_123428.jpg

Rockers arms were already replaced once as they are non BMW parts. But, wacking the rockershafts back in with the imprints from the Vice grips, caused massive grooves inside the soft bearing of the rockers:

Conrod bearing failed as well; the retaining edge broke off , and it wore down to show the copper layer.

It's the middle one instead pic, the 2 others are used, but they weren't dead yet.

Also it spun inside the conrod as well, eating the conrod and it's bearing cap:

This bearing cap was also on it's way, with a bright, grey spot where excessive wear is showing :

And, funny enough, when removing the valve cover, we noticed that copious amounts of RTV were used on the front half circle where the top chain cover sits.
Turns out that that small cover, with the distribution opening, was about 1 mm to low to seal with the valve cover.
I'm in need of a new one. Anyone? I think they need to be skimmed together with the head, is it not?

So in summary, this is what it needs:
- full set of new seals & bearings
- Rebore to oversize
- New oversize pistons & rings
- New cam
- 4 new rocker axles
- new cam shaft
- 12 new rockers
- regrind crankshaft

So It's not dead, but needs a lot to be healthy again.

It is quite a list, and may open up lanes for other engines...

There's a used, unknown condition CSi engine in my village. I'll ask for the price.

Open for advice. My budget is 5k max.
Or I'll have to sell my NOS front fender.

If you see something that I've missed, then I'd like to know. First time doing this
I do have the support from a capable engine builder doing only BMW's , about 6 M30's a year but a second opinion never hurts.

Not really surprised at the engine needs given the age. I would think that you could do a full rebuild for close to the $5k price tag provided you do the final assembly yourself.

I would think that you would want to plan on finding a replacement oil pump drive gear, and they are difficult to find. I found an NOS on eBay.

Thanks @boonies ; I'll have a look for the oil pump drive gear

Would it be this one?

Text describes it a CNC-ed repro part, alike pn 11411252577, which would be right for my car/engine.
Anyone have any experience with it?

That looks like the right one, the three bolt configuration is the same as on my 1972 engine and the part number matches. The design changed somewhere along the m30 production history with the later version(s) as I recall.

Anyone have experience or feedback about these m30 pistons:

Seems quite a good deal as they include the pistons rings as well for the range of sizes you can choose from.

I have not used CP-Carrillo pistons on an M30, but I have used them on an S14, S50 and S52. The S50 and S52 were race motors. I have been very happy with them. Most importantly, my machinist was very happy with them.
