Started on the rear suspension conversion to e28 component's . I had done this on my Green Race car where I felt free to do what I wanted. On this car being a street car I was trying to keep the fab work to a minimum , and bolt on type stuff. It would appear that is NOT possible. I have tried numerous different ways to get this done, and finally just started cutting and fabbing up my own parts to get the e28 stuff to work . If you guys are interested Ill start a new detailed thread how to for e28 conversion . Holler.
the biggest difficultly is the shocks , the e9 stuff has the coil on the trailing arm while the e28 is a coil over, the upper shock mounts are to small for coil over , and the location of the lower mount puts the shock coil assembly at a difficult angle , . I was hoping that we could cut out the stock shock tower and weld in an e28/e12 tower , this still left an undesirable angle and was too short , so we eventually just made our own.
stock e9 shock tower
a "mock up stock e28 shock , notice the misalignment up into the stock shock tower, and lack of room for the coil
Cut out the old tower, and the boxed that it attaches to
the e12/ 28 tower that we tried to make work , but ended up being to short and the angle was too severe for the shock to work correctly
New coil over shock from Ground control , note spherical bearing lower mount to help with the severe angle
Our own shock tower from scratch before getting located in the inner fender
the new tower tacked in to place
everything tacked into place , ready to be boxed in, and welded completely
