The task of this project Ive been postponing , was taken on . Installing the e36 front suspension into the E9 has been no small under taking . The Arc Asylum piece gave the appearance that it wouldn't be that big a deal, unfortunately that piece really does not aid at all , the install of a later engine or the suspension . As previously posted , we moved the frame mounts to move the subframe several inched further back in to the chassis which allowed us to install the engine , and fixed one issue with the suspension , leaving several other problems with the suspension. The rear pickup points still needed to be located, and then for the suspension to work correctly the inner pickup point needed to be raised in the subframe 2 ish inches . Not a small undertaking . Anyone familiar with e30, 36 46 front suspensions knows how the inner ball joint is mounted . There is a tapered hole for a 3 ish inch stud to go though . it was this piece that needs to be raised up to allow the entire range of motion of the control arm , and so that at ride height it is in the correct position . The Arc asylum piece puts this pick up point to low so that the suspension is maxed out when the car is at ride height .
We pulled the subframe back out of the car , cut out the section of it that holds the tapered pick up point . cleaned up the tapered socket so as it could be relocated higher up, Welded the socket at what use to be the top of that point , making it the bottom of the pick up , and leaving the section up on the bottom for clearance , then we reinstalled the frame to confirm that what we did would work . Once confirmed that this change will do what is needed , the frame will come back out , everything will be boxed in , gusseted , to strengthen it and finish it. So part 1 is done , just need to "finish " it off.
the engine supported by a deadman while we pulled the subframe out to modify it
the subframe before the pickup point is modified ,
cut out section of the subframe and the hole which was the top of the pick up point , now to be the bottom
you can see the relocated pick up point welded in place,
reinstalled the control arm in the raised pickup point
this allows the suspension full range of motion , and correct's the geometry , still need to pull everything back apart to finish the piece, box it in and gusset everything in for strength and protect it against the elements , etc
Very happy to get this part of the project behind me , its one thing to "bag " a car and slam it on the ground , it's another to make the suspension actually work
