Patricia A. Mayer's 3.0 CS / Paul Cain's Fjord project / The 300 mile Test Drive / VIII / Final Punch List

Albert,
These are very impressive photos. You have been very busy! Your installation looks great. How much wider did you make the drive tunnel to fit the 6 spd. What are your plans for center console now? These are big steps. For all of us, I would suggest that you start a Candia4441 thread and document all of the upcoming connections to this beautiful S54 motor. Thank you for sharing.

Paul--PM sent asking you where to buy the blue braid broke hose. W&N only had black hose when I replaced the original dirty blue hoses a few years ago.
Thanks, Drew

I want to make E9 owners aware of a fine supplier. Drive Shaft Pros. I used the one in Garden Grove Calif. but they have 6 locations in So. Cal. Yes, they will ship.
The engineer that makes the tooling for them is a BMW enthusiast and he has retooled and remanufacture all of the yokes and splines for our vintage BMW's. The below driveshaft is made from all new parts. All BMW compatible. Their price to rebuild an original is around $690 including shortening for a 5 spd. A new driveshaft is $525.00. They can make any dimensional changes you want. Super cooperative. Armando runs the front desk in Garden Grove. They know what they are doing.

Hi Paul, I will try to do as soon as one of E9 is completed and start running and anytime I post any pictures a funny guy jumped in and making a fun why my car ( Malaga E9 ) headlights are not original and it is very ugly, but that's how I like it please just check the picture and give me your opinion, after that I decide not to show my work anymore I like colors and I don't believe that your own car should have follow things on the car in original colors that is designer opinion not mine if I don't like the color I will paint it the color that I like my E31 have a 6" inch light on front under to me it is nice but I had complain about it or my Weber on my blue E9 is painted red believe me tomorrow I will have a post that is very ugly why is red or my wheels and they told me that I am doing things deferent, when you work hard and happy with result and you want to share with others someone jealous will say things that will make you regret, now I don't know if this is just excuse for not posting picture or I should post what I have

Thank you Paul for sharing this Project with us! There are a few guys with the knowledge and craftsmanship here and we Love following them !!
Please keep posting and updating us on your Beautiful build.

Tim,
Thanks for chiming in. Here are some additional pics as phase III finished.

I’d like to share my experience with the MAX 2k satin black paint This is a catalyzed rattle can with excellent finish and durability. It’s German, $17 a can and the can will last about two days after activation Surge tank is a finishing example. Normal paint prep caveats apply regarding prep and cleanliness

Distributor is now back from the rebuider. His suggestion is a mild 17° at 1,700 rpm, vacuum temporarily disconnected. He also suggested a points gap of 0.017'' (that is very close to the blue book spec of 0.015''). Thank you to Reyn's for the loaner of the distributor at the end of phase III. The rebuilt unit now has N.O.S. Bosch points, condenser, cap and rotor installed. New Bremi plug wires with new ends and NGK plugs. All contributed to a very smooth idle and full power. What a difference. Now on to the final timing setting this weekend and final tweaks on the carb adjustments.

Just put the final, final touches on Phase III. The distributor arrived back from its rebuild and it was finished off with a new set of wires, harness tube, plugs, points and condenser. What a difference in making the final tuning so much easier. Was able to find a BMW (mini cooper) battery that just needed so appropriate stickers and we are fully back to 1974.

The ride height with the stock springs was way too high. Fortunately, some guy back in the 1990's made a batch of adjustable front struts. I was lucky enough to find a pair that had never been installed. This allowed moving the spring perch down a full 40 mm allowing the stock springs to go back in. Its not stock, but I am so much happier with the new settings!

Phase IV begins -Exterior painting. This update is the last of the metal work the car needed before beginning sanding and primer.

The gaps on the doors and trunk on this example are ideal and very consistent. As a reminder this car still has the original paint. As you can imagine, the clear coat is totally gone on the top surfaces. The hood gaps on the fender sides and the nose panel were ideal and consistent at about 5. to 5.5 millimeters. The trailing edge gap at the base of the windscreen was comically large with a gap of nearly 3/4ths of an inch in a few areas. This is slightly risky, I've done this once before on a Mercedes Pagoda hood in aluminum and the project was a success. Task: grow the hood in length by adding more material on to the back edge. I was hopeful with this hood in mild steel it would be easier. Original plan is to keep these cardboard patterns on the car during the entire effort. The patterns lay over the hood and overlap to show and expose with a proper gap would look like. Its foldable and you can go back and forth working the area and then folding it back in place for a ref. check. See attached short video clip.

We ground off both sides on the trailing edge and ensured we had a clean welding surface. We started with just laying down lots of wire. Juan Tobias (the welder) had the exceptional idea to fabricate new strips in the exact thickness of the hood and fit them to the edge. Then weld them in. It took HOURS off the project and gave us great working material. Juan did the welding and I tried to stay ahead of him fabricating each curved strip (about 6 inches long) on the band saw with a quick finish grind. We got into a good grove and covered the entire back edge in about 2.5 hours.

Juan Tobias has a massive arsenal of grinders, sanders, etc. and it took another 30 minutes of grinding the top and bottom sides smooth. Then another 30 minutes of carefully grinding in the 'new' back edge. First test fit back on the car revealed we had area requiring a little more welding. The second test fit was a charm. Done. An exceedingly productive day on the project. Top down view shows the new gap. Looks factory, but its not.
