What did you do to your E9 today?

Spent October 3rd at Club Motorsports in Tamworth NH doing photo and video shoots for a couple of photographers. Ski Coach & Bill Glavin had their CSLs and I had Athena.

Installed a mini USB camera in the venturi of of my sidedrafts. Moved it from carb to carb to visually see the carb operating at various scenarios and to see if one was amiss. Pretty cool to view them in the wild. It's dribbling a little out of the main and you can see WOT accel into 3rd and 4th gear when the main jet spray comes in, and the throttle plate moving in back. Am going to lower the floats a little.

reset the front suspension washers and spacers.
and greased the fittings- put together dry first time
modified an e60 air box to fit the s38.

Today I took the cover off my car, rolled down the windows and let it get i little fresh air. I tested the area above the glove box and it's nice and sturdy. Honestly it's a bit surprising since the lower windshield frame is pretty bad in that area.

I sorted out all the parts that need to go to the Chrome Platers tomorrow,I looked at the tailight surrounds which should be plated attempted to remove the lenses , [tough job]thought of the price of the replacement lenses, and thought nahhh.

First I warmed up the garage... Then hit the exhaust system with a fresh coat of POR-15 muffler paint to cover the scratches from speed bumps. I got a brass expansion tank and had it pressure tested and cleaned, then painted it. The swap out seemed simple enough but as with all things coupe, contortions were required. BEFORE

AFTER

The remaining question is, do I apply the black sticker "cooling system contains long-life antifreeze coolant. On refilling refer to your owners manual" Kuhlsystem mit Langzeit - Gefrierschutz - Kiuhlmittel gefuit. Beim Auffullen Betriebsanleitung beachten!

Yes the tank is not easy to get on and off, various extensions are needed. I vote sticker on. I kept it off since my tank is au naturel and it would cover up the Behr logo. Since you're stock and have the other decals I say apply

Cool camera work Steve. Pretty neat.

I got the Solexes and the Pierburg rebuilt for the CS this evening. Jetting was not to my liking, but I had some spares that had what I needed. Hopefully, they work well. I'll likely put a little polish on them with the Dremel and some Penetrol before I'm satisfied...

Installed the Solexes and Pierburg 90 degree mechanical pump yesterday. Car flooded almost immediately with fuel coming out the vents... Sourced the trouble to the rebuilt Pierburg delivering too much pressure/volume. I quickly plumbed a fuel pressure regulator after the pump and second, clear filter to watch what would happen. Turned the pressure down to 2.5lbs and, presto... no more problems. Spent time synchronizing the carbs and playing with the mixture screws. It idles pretty as a picture at about 900 revs.

Also replaced the rear wheel cylinders and rear soft lines. Late this afternoon, I went to re-install the now-working ignition lock cylinder that had jammed up during Thanksgiving....except I messed it up. I put a machine screw in place of the original locking pin (which kept everything locked into the steering column) The screw was a tiny bit too long and went up into the cylinder and tweaked one of the brass wafers... jamming up the whole works again. Dammit...

Not having another NK ignition lock cylinder, I simply dove in and tore mine apart to fix it. I removed the back plate of the cylinder (keeping the key inserted) and removed the cylinder. Methodically removing each wafer and placing it in sequence, then cleaning each one, and using fine, gunsmith's files, I cleaned up all the burrs and worn edges in the cylinder. Satisfied it was as good as I could get it, I reassembled it... and it worked! Another Christmas Miracle....

It's all installed in the car now (with a properly fitted machine screw) and working well. I took the old man out for a spin around the block and will continue tweaking on the tune and fit the airbox tomorrow.

Oh.. also installed a new high/low beam stalk from Walloth Nesch. Sure wish they had the old style signal/washer stalk...

Here's some pics of the lock repair:

Enjoy the weekend y'all...
