What did you do to your E9 today?

The chrome surrounds on my c-pillar roundels had some slight pitting which has been jumping out at me every time I walk by. Surprisingly enough, new ones are available from BMW, so this became my holiday project. Despite reports that removing the cloisonne roundels is possible from outside the car, nothing I tried worked. And you know how the rest goes -- can't get to it until you remove this, which means you have to remove that, repeat ad nauseum. I removed the rear seats, package shelf, side panels, wood trim pieces (which required lowering the windows, which didn't work so I got to use the white nylon gear tool!), pulled up the black vinyl covering the inside of the c-pillar, and carefully pressed out the 2 posts holding the roundels. As they say, reassembly is reverse.

While in there, I discovered a nut missing from one seat belt anchor, missing plastic covering from behind the side panels, missing cover for the window motor, several missing clips and screws and misrouted wiring. Someone's been here before. No rotting rodents, however -- always a good thing.

These jobs always remind of the remarkable hand-assembled nature of these cars, apparently by tiny Bavarian hands. A labor of love lost forever.

Don,
I will be curious to learn if the chrome "targets" had a nut on them.
Mine simply pulled off.
Also will be curious to learn if the new ones from BMW fit. There have been a lot of stories about the new BMW parts not fitting...

Stan: I'm happy with the new targets -- very comparable to the quality of the originals. I was prepared to have my originals rechromed if the new ones were subpar.

My car has been painted at some point so the originals had been removed at least once. There were no nuts on the roundel posts but they had some nasty black goop adhesive all over the backs. And the chrome targets were held on by 2 screws each, of course, accessible once the roundels are off.

I used dental floss wrapped around the "C" pillar roundels to pull them from the outside. Took about 5 minutes.

That plastic strapping material that binds boxes of printing paper can also work well. It's strong and flexible and thin enough to get under most roundels. I keep some around for future use.

As for my car, I've been getting more parts in. Yesterday it was a wiring harness from an '83 320i. I'll pull wires from it when I add the A/C and relays for the headlights. The day before I got a BMW branded windshield gasket from Kurt.
Peter said last night he may be able to help me out with my A/C install and I got a chance to plumb the depths of Don's vast E9 knowledge and got some excellent advice.

Thanks to all and a Happy New Year!

Ian

Drove it!

Put a full afternoon of driving the 2000CS around the Austin area yesterday and took the old man and his sister to church this morning. Got lots of waves and thumbs up... made Papa proud.

Unfortunately, the rearview mirror came off the car on the road and car behind me nailed it... Not a major loss, as I think it was an aftermarket piece. The mount and stalk are still in-place, but the round mirror piece wiggled loose. I've already scrounged fleaBay and found a similar one and it's on the way. That'll do until I can find a good Talbot for the fender.

Sorted out all the lights on Friday and ordered some new Hella horns. This should wrap up everything I need for safe driving. Other than that, the car runs well, temp is steady at the 3:00 position, good power all the way to redline and cruises nicely at 70-75 at about 3200rpm... I need to confirm the speedo with my cellphone speedometer app.

I'll drive it more and more now. I'll take it around town and start getting estimates on interior and paint. Would sure like to knock it all out before summer.

Peter...sorry to have missed the party last night. We'll catch up this week.

Well, not my e9, but I changed the oil in my friend's Verona which has the original oil filter set up and I had flashbacks of the 80's and remembered why this is the worst maintenance task on these cars. Oil everywhere despite the plastic bag tricks etc. My wife had to come out from the house to see why I was cursing so much. Next time I will do the remove it from the block technique but I didn't have a spare gasket to do so. I have the spin on adapter on my car and had not done one of these in 30 years but it all came back like a nightmare. Anyway, the wine has calmed me down and the cars are happy:

I have the original bolt through oil canister too, changed the oil once, that was enough for me to take it to a trusted shop for oil changes.

Does your friend want to sell any of those red 9 blade fans wasting away on his wall? LOL.....

Man I need to clean that crap up but it's all stuff I "need" :)

Yes I will sell you one if you need it, I am keeping one for a back up. Didn't I send you a 5 blade one a few years ago? Upgrading?

Me think that would be Steve's garage

I had my black fan repainted red with flexible vinyl paint. It looks great now, but I don't know how long it will last.

Steve-O Yes you did fine sir.....no worries. I will send that back to you. Does the red 9 blade accommodate a clutch? I have a 9 blade black fan sitting on my wall brand new with the clutch ready to go in for an upgrade yes. But I'm waiting to do my AC and oil cooler at same time which is ready to go within a few weeks. I can send you a brand new 9-blade black fan if the clutch interchanges with your red one and the 5-blade of course. I'm guessing it doesn't accommodate the clutch though. Let me know. If not I will just paint red like Isquaredb mentioned with his black fan. Once it is in, I will send your 5 red blade back, that was very nice of you. It's still in great condition and kept the car cool. But once I put AC in I want to go with bigger fan.

I thanked the the guy who is going to do the sanding and polishing on my freshly painted POLARIS SILVER CSL,for showing up, its about 104 here today in Sydney, The Man is a hero, I went home for a nap.

Shane,

The five blade fan sits on the early mechanical clutch, later red and black fans use the viscous clutch. First viscous clutch mounts to a nose piece that mounts to the pump, the later viscous style uses a newer pump with single large bolt, called a spin-on. Makes a big difference on what you have now.

Thanks but I don't need the 5 blade back, it would just go back on the wall! As Chris said the red mounts the same as the black 9 blade, they just came eariler and look more "period." I have a red 9 blade on my car now plus 2 spares one of which I will sell to you if you still want one, PM me if so.

Finally warmed up outside so I pulled the cover on my car and started it up. Put some air in the tires and let it run for about 15 minutes. I have one of those big bucket damp rids in the car now. Smells good and dry inside. I'm getting water trapped between the cover and the body. Need to hurry up and dissect my parts car so I can get this thing inside!

repaired high beam dip switch. had become sloppy, like it was coming apart. well, indeed it was. The casing is crimped in 4 places and the alloy body of the switch inside the steering column had kinda disintegrated in one corner allowing bakelight board to pivot when stalk was operated. Once I had everything out on the bench I found room for a strategically placed zip tie to restore the static firmness of the "box". Operates as new now. (backup plan is NOS E3 turn signal switch with identical wiring, just different plug attachment). Mike
