The worst thing about getting struck with the strange never-ending 2017 cold/flu thing is that I can't wrench on my car. That makes my post-count get out of control, but more problematic is the parts searching. What does one do when they find something uber cool! Anyway, I've toned down the parts hunt especially after the buyer guilt that came from this needless purchase. :D

So I've always had this thing for headlight wipers, whether it was a Volvo, a Mercedes, or a BMW. Some people think it's silly, others may understand. Regardless, they are rare and I think it sets the car apart from the pack.

So with that said, a few weeks ago I sourced a bunch of parts. These are all factory E3/E9/E12 parts.

Seller #1: Wipers from Germany:

Seller #1: I bought a used E9 wiper motor, hoping to use it as a 'template'.
Seller #2: I purchased two inexpensive more available Mercedes W116/W123 motors. As it turns out, the Mercedes motors have a larger splined shaft. Probably still usable with modifications, but this is a non-issue at this point. I'll stick them on Ebay:

Seller #3: NOS Wiper Motors from France - some of you may have seen these - Stan, not surprising they have been for sale for a while:

Seller #4: E9 Headlight rings with wiper stops:

There are only a handful of members with such wipers. Nicad has been very helpful, snapping tons of pics for me. The dual wiper pump is NLA, but can be easily rectified with a second VDO wiper pump. The factory dual bung wiper tank is still available from BMW, and it's only $50. That leaves me with the wiring. The gentleman who sold me the rings offered to build a harness for me. I'll probably take him up on it. Before I proceed, a local E9 member has the rings on his E3, and I'm hoping he has the wiring under the hood. I just need to take a look at the car to examine. I don't think he has any intentions of unloading the car so this is a low priority task. I also don't plan on driving in the rain and if I do, I'll be okay if the wipers don't turn. :)

I created a separate thread on this to figure out how to do the plumbing and wiring:

I've been burying my ongoing parts purchases in previous threads to handle the accounting without a needless update.

These are so pretty that I felt they were worthy of a post. I traded some CSI parts for a set of Stahl headers. I had them shipped directly to Performance Coatings in Auburn for a coating of "chromex". It's good to 1300 degrees. Not their most durable finish but nice looking. The cost is normally $275 plus shipping but the headers were longer than Brad expected. Total cost with tax was $350. I may coat a spare valve cover for $80.

A few other things that I picked up, already accounted for.

Solid Momo Hub, €75 + Shipping:

NLA - NOS 2800 CS "2800" badge, €40 + Shipping. I also picked up a NLA - NOS 2.5 CS "2.5" badge that someone may want.

yeah buddy ... gotta love the Stahl header. is the primary tube 1 3/8" or 1 1/2"?

Thanks! They are 1.5". I suspect that most people think that this is too much flow for the 2800CS, but I figure with the high compression 2.8, triple webers, and a cam they should match up fairly well. A little aggressive but we shall see. I suspect that my cam isn't factory, but I haven't verified yet.

its a bit much for anything but a serious firebreather. according to Jere Stahl, you need to be above 240 hp on an m30 for 1 1/2' for optimal - serious cam, very high compression pistons, etc. this is about where korman's stage 2 is ... and they use the 1 3/8" ... they don't go to the 1 1/2" until the stage 3.

Yep I posted that article in the Stahl thread. I foersee a torque-less wonder in my future. In the mean time I have some nice wall art. :) Honestly I'm not that worried about it. An M90 is 218hp stock and I find about one a month. I don't want to swap the motor but I would be up for it if the motor doesn't cut it. My timeline is in years so it's all relative. I guess the real question would be, if I am running DCOE 40's and a larger cam, would 1.5" headers be better than a 2800CS factory manifold?

Correction! I was told that they were 1.5", and was going to trade them and run them despite the aggressive primary diameter. I measured them this morning and they are in fact 1 3/8". They should work great with my setup!

I had the car cover off for two days since the weather was nice. I had an itch this evening to pull the rocker covers off. I only had time to remove the passenger cover. It's about what I expected. I suppose I should stop buying steering wheels. :D

My kids were playing with my phone during easter brunch and they got their greasy paws all over my camera lens...

Other than that, spending money on things I could live without.

Daddywad's Alpina Strut Bar NIB - $415
Black Leather Seats Front/Rear - $500
Rare Steering Wheel - $160
Box of parts to keep/sell - $20

At this point I have three sets of front seats and two sets of rears, and an extra set of black headrests. I need to go through everything and figure out what internals I want to use. No matter what I'll be selling a rear seat shortly. I suspect that I'll keep my blue leather rear seat as it is in better condition than the black leather that I just bought. I was really after tear free leather. Getting very close to having everything I need for an interior overhaul.

I took my car for a five mile drive the other night. One more thing that I need to do, my tail lights are out. The side markers are working so I think the bulbs are just shot.

I am 100% confident that my alternator isn't working. I thought this was the case, but another drive confirmed it. I'm going to have my parts car alternator tested.

I bought a set of AC Console sides for my car. I don't intend to run AC, but I like the profile of the AC console better. It also means that I don't have to refinish the wood piece down by the shifter. I'll be running a 3D printed gauge plate that I will prototype in September. These console sides will be used for the prototype. - $175

A "No Space" BMWCCA grille badge for $50.

Shipped some e21 Recaro seats for a member: -$150

Total Spend: $9,895

No patina and the originals have very crisp lettering.

Andrew, It looks like the original is enamel paint in a sand-cast plate and the repro is cloissonné in a chromed casting. Old school versus current technology. Leave it to you to have both...
