'73 3.0CS - M88 Jerez Schwarz build

Don't lower her to much....
I did that with every car every time.
Can't stand and after I heat the driving cause suspension is too hard and bump into the end stops....

I would get the rear tires a bit more out.
That will look even better.

Nice job so far.

Breiti
I went from 3.5 inch lips on the rear to 2.5 (5.5 inner barrel) as didn't want too much stretch with the 225s. I might go to 3 inch at some point with them

MOT and taxed, she is now road legal for the first time since 1988!

With the legal bits done started to get her all polished up. There was still a fair few marks from when I flatted down previously. Only had a day to do the car so not perfect but far better than before and gave the engine bay a clean. Correction has really helped the paint pop and is purple under artificial light with some blue under natural lighting.

Cleaned up the engine bay, next is to fit the 2000CS bumper, mount the alarm siren correctly, fit plates back on and take her on the first proper shakedown run

The exhaust manifold is a piece of art!
(Isn’t it too hot for the plastic tube on top of your cilinder head?)

The exhaust manifold is a piece of art!
(Isn’t it too hot for the plastic tube on top of your cilinder head?)

Its been at operating temperature for extended periods of time about 30 minutes or so and not had any issues so far. Heat management is the biggest worry for me currently however

25 mile shakedown run, other than the drivers door deciding to pop open nothing to report! Sound is incredible, goes like schnell, surprised at how complaint the ride is even with the coilovers, polybushes and stiffer rubber bushes.

Few little pieces to do to her tomorrow then ready for Gaydon!

Also fitted the rechromed 2000CS bumper on today with the rechromed original license plate lamps as the new ones from hella are just painted plastic

250 miles yesterday, car drove absolutely great. First show and was a pleasure seeing so many of the forum members there. Car got plenty of love and parked up with all of the fantastically restored CSLs even my lowly peasant spec model didn't seem out of place. The sound is incredible. I've not taken her past 4000 yet whilst still running in but seems to come on cam right around there and the noise is intoxicating

A few things to fix

Drivers quarterlight needs adjustment as above 65mph some serious wind noise

Electric vacuum pump seems sporadic in assistance. Sometimes I have lots, sometimes none. Hoping it's just adjustment

Need to redesign and re print the centre caps as lost one on the way back!

Took her out again for BMWs of the 20th century at Denbies Vineyard, all running fantastic until the speedo sounded like the jetsons space ship on the way back and died. Either the cable seized or something stripped inside the speedo.

More concerningly later down the road felt a sudden knock and massive vibration from the back. Immediately pulled over to the hard shoulder to be met with the driveshaft being held on with 1 bolt by a few threads. A bit alarming as it was all tightened and checked twice. Seems like 2 of the threads have pulled out of the output shaft on the diff. Managed to jack the car up and bolt a few of them on tight enough to load onto a recovery truck which was a 2 hour wait, only for them to drop me off 500m down the road and said I had to wait another 2 to 4 hours in order for another truck. Luckily a friend saw me and collected me but from breaking down at 6:30pm the 45 mile trip home didn't finish till 2am!

This week i will pull the driveshaft and output flange off and inspect the damage

Oh my... sorry to hear that. LocTite?
Spoken to a few people and has happened before, plus I've seen a fair few come to me with loose bolts before. This has later output flanges that are threaded only rather than having a nut on the back, I will remove both sides, machine them to accept a nut on the back, then probably threadlock and schnorr washers. Potentially overkill but loose bolts are always a worry. I'd rather not have rotating items flailing about under neath the car damaging bits or worse

Machined the backs of the later output flanges to accept locking nuts, also put threadlock on and really cranked down the bolts. Few hundred miles done. Rechecked and all ok!

Next problem, on the way to a show last weekend heard a knocking noise from the rear. The brand new rear shock mount rubbers purchased from walloth had completely split in half on one side and just caught in time on the other. No damage to the car luckily. Will be changing the rubbers to a sandwich style mount to stop this happening in future.

She also picked up her first trophy which was a bit surprising and unexpected with over 1100 cars in attendance and plenty of very high quality builds with the majority high modified late models so not the usual crowd for our type of vehicles.

And yes, I do need to try and do something about the windscreen trims

This is always an exciting and inspiring blog to follow; congratulations on finally getting the vehicle on the road!

I think your attention to detail - an all forms - had you prepared for the two unexpected issues that occurred. Relieved to read you were able to recover quickly without damage to the vehicle.

The throttle pull video sounds great.. reminds me of my '88 M5. All I can say is wait until you hit 6000 rpm with that motor.

Slightly off-topic question: what model is the Audi next to your vehicle in two photos on the previous post? I don't know much about Audi, but the car caught my attention.
