Here is a very bad copy of an Alpina document from 1974, with the specs of their camshafts.
Our 300° camshafts should have "601" engraved on the rear end.

My camshaft also has 2582701.
They are very likely identical.
300° was the standard camshaft for all 3.0 engines.
348 and 351 could be references to the production runs.

Does your cylinder head have the stock "Dreikugelwirbelwanne" shape, like mine ?

Yes, looks like it does..

Also found this cool article and thought I’d share it haha

Hi Andreas,

This is very interesting.

Is yours a B2 as well ?
Please post pictures !

Already three Alpina engines with the same color, can it be a coincidence ?

This is my valve cover! A little bit dusty, car was stored in a dry garage since 1982.

I think the colour maybe depends on the company who bought the engines from Alpina and customized these a little bit!

It has to be a coincidence.

I just asked Alpina if they knew anything about red/pink valve covers...
The answer is NO.

They say their covers were always anthracite and they never heard of an Alpina agent/dealer repainting valve covers.

So this is 4 cars already...

Let’s be patient, one day we will know the story around the raspberry colored valve covers.

We could ask on the 2002 forums.
There are a few very knowledgeable people there.

Well the bodywork goes on and on, maybe I’ll get it back this year, maybe not..

In the mean time I continued a little bit preparing the engine for tuning on the dyno.
I had a complete stainless system made by classic exhaust in Regensburg Bavaria. Their manifold is an optimised variation of the original Alpina manifold so very fitting to my engine :D super happy with it.

Given the way the rest of the build has gone I decided to take the carbs back to ItalAuto to have them rebuilt again. This time not a complete rebuild, just a refresh with all new plated hardware and some blasted aluminium to match the rest of the engine. Definitely overkill but they do look great!

And while I was at it I had the intake and valve cover stripped again and powdercoated properly haha :p

Really great workshop with some amazing projects. Very happy with them and can’t wait to bring the engine to their dyno.

Here’s a before pic incase you missed it haha

That manifold looks awesome, shame the rack gets in the way on the RHD cars otherwise i'd have one in a heartbeat!

So, It’s not looking hopeful that the body and paint will be finished this year. This is complicating on several levels, but I hope in the end it will be worth the wait.

Only some small updates in the mean time..

I received some parts I ordered from @daddywad a long time ago. Front and rear alpina strut braces and a rear Motorsport spoiler.

The parts look very nice, except the rubber section of the rear spoiler is super glossy. I would like to have more of a satin/matte finish like the original, so I might experiment with some different process’ on the underside of it. (Some e30 guys used ultra fine steel wool to restore the rubber mtech sloilers) Open to other suggestions in this?

The scope creep continues as I have more and more time to wait.
I had the exhaust manifolds ceramic coated. I always loved the look of the white manifolds on the period race cars and wanted to incorporate that into this special motor.

I also decided to go all the way getting all the last of hardware zinc plated so every nut and bolt will be new. Will be able to start assembling the engine again soon.
How out of control this is getting Haha

Speaking of which.. I couldn’t find a solution I was happy with to keep the bare aluminium clean and relatively low maintenance. (Clear coat/wd40/owatrol/penetrieren etc..) so i decided to pull everything and get it powdercoated a fine structure silver. Finish looks almost exactly like fresh blasted aluminium and will be far easier to mainting for years to come especially since I plan to drive this thing not just store it away!
I’ve seen this done with good results before. Looking forward to see how that comes out.

Inside the rear arches was fairly clean luckily. Here it is mocked up with the Wallothnesch repair panels.
These pics are already from a while ago. Hoping to get some more updates soon.

Cheers

Hi James, the wire wool approach will do if you need a more matte finish. The other option is to use very fine wet and dry with soapy liquid.
